Advanced equipment and technology
The most advanced equipment
The past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of Flower Mound Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets practical standards for restoration and cleaning. The IICRC S500 Water Damage Guide is a specific set of practical standards that incorporate the field of psychometry, which involves the manipulation of temperature and relative humidity to remove moisture and dry a property quickly and effectively. By using equipment such as thermal imagine cameras to identify the location of unwanted water, truck-mounted and portable extraction units for performing efficient water removal, high-velocity air movers that allow moisture to evaporate at a faster pace, air scrubbers to remove odors and control air quality, and OSHA-approved cleaning agents, SERVPRO of Flower Mound is invested in delivering the best quality service with the most advanced technology.
SERVPRO of Flower Mound puts in a team for the local 5k
On Saturday October 20th, as the sun lingered behind the horizon six members of the SERVPRO of Flower Mound team stood in front of the AMC movie theater located in The Shops at Highland Village. Laughing and attempting to stretch they prepared for the Texas Fallen PD 5k with no guise of experience. The attendance was not due to a love of running nor to a profound interest in waking long before the sun rose, but instead a love and appreciation for those who protect our communities. As a franchise owned by a veteran and a corporation that is sponsoring the NCAA First Responder’s Bowl, events such as these are where we choose to spend our time. Giving back to our community and spending the rest of the day within The Shops at Highland Village meeting some of the citizens that call Southern Denton counties such as Flower Mound, Lewisville and Highland Village their home.
Commercial property takes on water
A Community in need deserves SERVPRO of Flower Mound indeed
Mitigation is defined as the act of mitigating, or lessening the force or intensity of something unpleasant. The management staff at one local assisted living facility took the message to heart when they noticed water getting in through some windows. As the deluge of rain fell from the heavy black storm clouds technicians at the SERVPRO of Flower Mound office received the call and began deploying resources. Before the clouds had a chance to retreat technicians were on site working quickly and around the clock. Within a few days the project site was brought back to preloss condition with limited business interruption.
The truth about our service is that we don’t ever want you to need us. We are not a company that you want to need, but just like insurance when the time come you’ll be happy we’re there.

The Water Damage Restoration Process
Technician Shane taking moisture readings
Every water damage situation is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” water damage emergency.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The cleanup and restoration begins with a phone call. Our national call center is fully staffed 24 hours a day and ready to dispatch the nearest SERVPRO Franchise Professionals to your home or business. When you are dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial. A delay of just a few hours can greatly increase the severity of damage
Step 2: Inspection and Damage Assessment
The water damage restoration process begins with a detailed inspection of your property, including a damage assessment. The SERVPRO Franchise Professional is determining the scope of the damage so he or she can develop an appropriate plan of action.
Step 3: Water Removal/Water Extraction
The water extraction step removes the majority of the water from your home or property. By performing a thorough water extraction, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals help reduce the drying time and help to prevent mold and secondary water damage. They use powerful pumps and truck-mounted vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons of water from your property.
Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification
After the water removal step, your floors and walls may look dry at first glance, but they are still wet to the touch. Most building materials, like drywall and wood, are porous and will retain significant water. The retained water will cause these materials to warp, swell, or break down and can also cause mold damage.
Step 5: Cleaning and Sanitizing
Your property’s walls, floors, and other surfaces will likely need professional cleaning treatments. Besides cleaning your property’s structure, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will also clean your belongings, like furniture, upholstery, clothing, and other restorable personal items, damaged by the water. Flooding and water damage often require odor removal and deodorization treatments, since wet materials have an unpleasant odor.
Step 6: Restoration
Restoration, the final step, is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet, or may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
Somethings just can't be replaced
The SERVPRO of Flower Mound franchise provides cleanup and recovery services for many biohazard situations. These include the following:
Crime scene residues
Tear gas cleanup
Meth lab cleanup
The decontamination of a home or business due to trauma, sewage backups, chemical spills, hoarding, or other biohazards can be both dangerous and emotional. Because of this specialized training and experience is key when choosing a cleanup company.
Recently we were called to a woman’s home in Grapevine to attend to the belongings after such an event and while it was undeniably sad, it was heartwarming to be able to tell the family that we could restore the belongings of their loved one. It is always a big selling point that restoration costs a dramatic amount less than replacing, but in such events there is no way to replace the sentimental personal effects.
Water Damage Timeline
Storms cause water damage
- Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
- Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
- Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
- Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.
Hours 1 - 24:
- Drywall begins to swell and break down.
- Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
- Furniture begins to swell and crack.
- Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
- A musty odor appears.
48 Hours to 1 Week:
- Mold and mildew may grow and spread.
- Doors, windows, and studs swell and warp.
- Metal begins to rust and corrode.
- Furniture warps and shows signs of mold.
- Paint begins to blister.
- Wood flooring swells and warps.
- Serious biohazard contamination is possible.
More Than 1 Week:
- Restoration time and cost increase dramatically; replacing contaminated materials and structural rebuilding may be extensive.
- Structural safety, mold growth, and biohazard contaminants pose serious risks to occupants.
Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
What should you do after a fire?
Your family is safe, all pets and stuffed animals included, now what? Here are easy tips to remember for AFTER a fire:
- Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
- Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
- Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
- If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
- Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
- Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
- Change HVAC filter.
- Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.
- Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
- Attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
- Use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
- Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
- Send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.
Knowledge is power and becoming familiar with what you should and shouldn’t do ensures that when a disaster does strike your family will be able to recover quickly.
DID YOU KNOW? (storm)
While thunder won't hurt you-lightning will!
Being a restoration company you will often hear of the doom and gloom associated with storms. But when properly prepared for storms can be really interesting!
Here are a few fun storm facts:
- In order for there to be a thunder storm you need three things
- Moisture (to make the clouds and the rain)
- Unstable air (usually warm air that can rise rapidly)
- Lift (something able to lift the air, such as fronts, mountains or sea breezes)
- At any one moment there are nearly 1.800 thunderstorms occurring
- The lightning produced from thunderstorms kill more people each year than tornadoes do
- By counting the seconds between the flash of lightning and the clap of thunder you can estimate how many miles away a storm is!
DID YOU KNOW? (mold)
While many of us think of mold and cringe because we associate it with bad things such as infections, disease and death, the truth of the matter is that there is a lot of mold in the world that we love to eat and couldn’t live without!
Did you know:
- Cheese is made from mold. Geotrichum candidum to be exact.
- Quorn, a meat substitute primarily sold in the UK, is fusarium venenatum.
- Alexander Fleming, a brilliant Scottish physician, microbiologist and pharmacoligist discovered penicillin from a mold called Penicillium notatum. It was actually the world’s first antibiotic.
- The immunosuppressant drug cyclosporine, used to suppress the rejection of transplanted organs, is derived from the mold Tolypocladium inflatum.
- Several statin cholesterol-lowering drugs are derived from molds

What Secondary Damage can occur after water damage in your home or commercial building?
Sebastian and Noah working on drying a structure
After water leaks or flood damage, if not properly dried and treated, a home or business can develop mold from the moisture left on: wood, tile, carpeting, windows, concrete, and/or other materials/items that were affected. SERVPRO of Flower Mound strives to prevent secondary damage every time we remediate water damage. Building material and flooring are dried and treated to prevent mold and other allergens/contaminates using specialized equipment and cleaning products.
If water damage is not properly treated, the perfect environment is created for mold spores to grow in your home and to contaminate the air that is breathed.
Should you ever suffer water damage due to: a water heater leak, sink overflow, fire, refrigerator leak, excessive rain, storm damage, leaky roof, flood damage, or any other reason water has invaded your home or business, please know that SERVPRO of Flower Mound is here to help. Mold Needs the Right Environment to Grow
PPE when dealing with mold is a must
We are constantly exposed to thousands of different types of fungi in our everyday lives. Certain types of fungi tend to exist naturally in soils, plants, fruits and textiles. Exposure to these fungi in naturally occurring doses is generally not harmful.
Mold can grow on areas with the following:
- Water, moisture or high humidity
- Food (any organic substance)
- The right temperature (generally 68-86 degrees F, but some can grow in 30 degrees or colder)
- Lack of ventilation
- Mold presents greater challenges to young children, the elderly and other immunosuppressed people.
- Some molds can produce toxins if the environmental conditions are right.
If you suspect you have mold, please contact SERVPRO® of Flower Mound today.
Is your home storm ready?
As restoration professionals we often see the outcome of a home that wasn’t storm ready and in light of the billowing storm clouds outside of our office window I believe this is a perfect time to reach out with some helpful reminders!
- Let everyone in your home know what the plan is in the event of a storm, knowledge is power.
- Have furniture placed away from doorways so exit points aren’t blocked and have items arranged so that you could live on a single floor if need be. Think of warm clothing, blankets and whatever else you may need close at hand.
- Delicate items and those of value should be kept off of walls or shelves and placed in safe places, especially during storm season.
- Make sure you have insurance with details and a hard copy easily accessible, it’s a sad truth that many people don’t have as much coverage as they need when a catastrophe strikes.
It’s always sad to talk about the what-if’s involved with emergency storm situations, but being prepared is one way you can assure your life will get back to normal as quickly as possible.
Who wore it better
Ghostbuster... or MOLD-buster
Why does one of our technicians look like he could be a part of the ghostbusters gang? Because PPE! PPE stands for personal protective equipment and it’s an integral part of making sure our team stays safe while handling a variety of situations. In this photo our technicians is working on a mold job, which is more commonly when you’ll see one of our team dawn the gear. However, our production manager Jake as well as our franchise owner John just dressed up in a similar outfit to inspect a biohazard clean up. The get up may look silly, but SERVPRO of Flower Mound makes health and safety a priority; both for our work family and our customer that become family.
Identifying the different levels of fire damage
Burnt Bunny makes a full recovery
Much like anything else, all fires are not the same. Some burn blue while others orange and some create more smoke than others. Because there are many different types of fire, there are many different types or fire damage and therefore many different types of fire restoration.
Minor fire damage can be identified by a light to moderate amount of smoke residue only in a few areas. As such, restoration calls for dry and/or wet cleaning the ceilings, walls, floors and contents.
Mediums fire damage situations, those where smoke residue is moderate and more materials are affected, typically will require repainting. In addition to the new coat of paint materials such as drywall, cabinets and contents are more likely to need to be replaced.
Last are the major fire damage scenarios. When the fire becomes so hot at a specific point that the structural frame and/or finishes become charred. This fire damage requires emergency services and will often require restorers to pack up any salvageable belongings to store at a separate location.
The best way to avoid all three types of fire damage is to practice safety measure, ESPECIALLY in the kitchen!
The Mold Remediation Process
Moldy carpet at local property
You realized that you need mold remediation, so you gave your local SERVPRO® a call and now you’re wondering “what are they going to do?” While it may not be pretty and it certainly isn’t easy, SERVPRO® has taken the process of mold remediation and broken it down it to simple steps.
First we have to inspect. Where is it growing, what caused it and most importantly, what do we need to do to get rid of it. Once the plan of action is decided the contaminated area(s) are contained and the air is filtered while trained technicians remove all mold and mold-infested materials. As a team works to clean the structure another team will work on the contents and belonging that were within the structure. Furniture, decorations and clothing can all be affected by mold and SERVPRO® of Flower Mound is prepared to clean it all!
Do you have an ERP for your commercial property?
A team that's always ready to go
One of the most important aspects of having a business is having an emergency evacuation plan. It is a sad truth that many people have been hurt when a company or building lack such a plan and an emergency, such as a fire, occurs. Such a plan ensures the safety and wellbeing of individuals within a structure. An ERP, emergency readiness plan, offers that same assurance, but to the owner and the business. It is the handbook on getting your business back open and running in a timely manner. Who to call, where to find valves and knobs and most importantly a layout already on hand for your local SERVPRO® so that mitigation can begin as soon as possible.
Whether you choose to have an electric copy on your phone or a hard copy on hand, the ERP is easily accessible to whomever. It is your peace of mind as of business owner, that extra insurance policy when you go on vacation, because you know that in the event of an emergency all of the proper steps will be taken to ensure a quick recovery.

So you have mold... what now?
Our Project Manager Megan is always ready to hear what's going on and answer any questions you may have
Being a SERVPRO® franchise that is licensed in mold remediation means that we at SERVPRO® of Flower Mound get quite a bit of phone calls that begin with “what do I do?” So I am here with the answers!
- We need as much information as you can possibly think of when you first call. This means how much mold you can see, what surfaces it is covering, how long has it has been there and where do you think the moisture is coming from that has caused the mold. The more we know, the better prepared we are to assist!
- Depending on how you answer we will either schedule an appointment to come and take a look for ourselves or we will advise you to call a mold inspector.
- The inspector will do just as the name implies, he/she will come to your location and test the air. This step is important because it lets you know just what kind of mold is present. The testing also give the inspector the information to put together what is called a protocol. Basically a step by step instruction manual telling a remediation expert, such as ourselves, what to do in order to pass the follow up test.
- After our work is done, the inspector returns to the property and tests again.
Still have more question? Send us an email or give us a call and we’d be happy to answer them! The scariest part is not knowing.
House fires now burn hotter and faster, so what do you do?
Like it never even happened
Fire is the visible process of combustion. Once fuel is heated to its ignition point the duration of the flame is dependent on three factors, oxygen, heat and fuel. In complete combustion fuel will not create smoke or other products, only water and carbon dioxide. This creates the blue flame that we typically see in homes from cooking. Complete combustion requires there be enough oxygen to completely combine with the fuel gas, when there is not enough oxygen you have incomplete combustion. This is going to typically be a yellow or orange flame that produces smoke.
An article by TODAY states that research shows 30 years ago you would have had about 17 minutes to get out of a house that was on fire. Today that time is down to 3 or 4 minutes. Since newer homes have more synthetic materials, the backing on carpets, the drapes and most pillows, house fires now burn hotter and faster.
So what do you do? Become informed, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! The top five common causes of house fires are cooking equipment, heating, smoking in bedrooms, electrical equipment and candles. Knowing what to be cautious of is step one, step two is having a plan to get out of the house and to contact emergency services in the event of a fire and step three is calling SERVPRO® of Flower Mound to get back into your home “like it never even happened”.
Are you sure you're ready for vacation?

NCEI reports over $300 billion of loss in TX
A lot of damage requires a lot of equipment, and that we have.
Over the last year the National Centers for Environmental Information reported over three hundred billion dollars of loss caused by disasters in Texas. While the enormity of the number speaks volumes on its own, it is important to remember that it is not just a number. It is people. That number reflects your neighbors, your friends and your family. The number is pulling money out of the family vacation fund or sleeping in a hotel for however long it takes get a home back together.
SERVPRO® of Flower Mound knows this which is why we take each call personally. With a contact time averaging under 3 minutes our family here at SERVPRO® of Flower Mound wants you to know we are doing what it takes to make it “Like it never even happened.” as fast as we can.
IT'S BLACK MOLD.... I think.
The fear of black mold has been around for as long as I can remember, and while I’m only 23 that’s still a substantial amount of time! Since coming into the restoration business and dealing with the multicellular growth on a regular basis I’ve learned some things.
First, just because your mold is black does not mean you have BLACK mold. It sounds silly but it’s the truth, molds such as Nigrospora and Cladosporium are black in color but are not known to have toxic side effects. Second, Stachybotrys chartarum, more commonly referred to as black mold can actually also be dark green. The third, and arguably the most important, thing I’ve learned since joining the business is that unless you’re a trained professional there is no way to know for sure.
If you’ve seen any growth within your home or business give us a call at (972) 420-4771, we’d be happy to take a look for you!
Three businesses flood in
Water damage in commercial properties does not stop business
"There's water! There's an inch of water covering the entire building!"
While the idea of an inch of water throughout your building is a horrific thought to many homeowners, it's a familiar beginning to many of the calls we take here.
Who was on the unfortunate end of this particular phone call? A dentist office, restaurant and a nail salon all a part of one shared property.
The second call was shorter, less panicked; "our technicians will be at your location in 10-15 minutes.
Water damage does not discriminate between residential and commercial properties, and for that very reason neither does SERVPRO® of Flower Mound. 24hr emergency services and a team of trained professionals is what you will get every time. 1-4-8 is the standard, and we love to go above and beyond it.

Would you believe there is no such thing as mold removal, because you should.
"I wouldn't want my grandchildren in there"
Philip J. Hilts, in a 1997 New York Times pieces, writes
“EVEN the ancients had trouble coping with mold. In the worst case, the Book of Leviticus instructs, move out of the house. And a recent study published in Caduceus, a medical journal, theorizes that the last of the 10 plagues of Egypt was actually poisonous mold.”
The seriousness of having mold should never be minimized and your family here at SERVPRO® of Flower Mound have made sure to have not only the equipment, but also the qualifications to safely remove mold from your property.
Some companies may advertise “mold removal” or even guarantee to remove all mold, this is a fallacy. Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business.

Cooking is the number one cause of house fires.
That loud alarm isn't a timer.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, Cooking is the Number One Cause of House Fires
The number one source of house fires is cooking – usually leaving pots or pans unattended on the stove while you run away to do something for “just a minute.” The NFPA says that 40% of all house fires, or an average of 156,600 per year, start this way, causing approximately $853 million in property damage. Two-thirds of the fires started because the food or other materials caught fire.
Fires are more likely to start on a range (57%) as compared to the oven (16%), mainly due to frying. Most injuries occur when the cook tried to put out the fire.
- Be alert when cooking and don’t leave food unattended.
- Don’t throw water on a grease fire, put a lid on the pan to smother the fire.
- Keep clothing, pot holders, paper towels and other flammable items away from the stove.
- Have working smoke detectors in the house and keep a fire extinguisher nearby just in case.

SERVPRO of Flower Mound is a licensed mold remediation company with the state of Texas. Although we are licensed to remediate the mold we are not licensed to test for it. For those situations a mold assessment consultant is required in order to draft a remediation protocol to which we must strictly follow.
This commercial property experienced a water loss and had structural drying performed. As the business awaited rebuild they noticed musty odors coming from several rooms. In one room there was visible microbial growth on the wallpaper however no other rooms showed signs of growth. A mold assessment consultant was called in to test the air and provide samples to generate a protocol for remediation.
Once we received the protocol we were able to put together a scope of work for the customer to resolve the issue. Check out our mold page for more information on our remediation services.
How to Decrease Your Mold Exposure
Call SERVPRO of Flower Mound for Mold Remediation Services
How can people decrease mold exposure?
Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. Sensitive individuals should avoid areas that are likely to have mold, such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Inside homes, mold growth can be slowed by controlling humidity levels and ventilating showers and cooking areas.
- Keep humidity levels as low as you can—no higher than 50%–all day long. An air conditioner or dehumidifier will help you keep the level low. Bear in mind that humidity levels change over the course of a day with changes in the moisture in the air and the air temperature, so you will need to check the humidity levels more than once a day.
- Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months.
- Be sure the home has adequate ventilation, including exhaust fans.
- Add mold inhibitors to paints before application.
- Clean bathrooms with mold killing products.
- Do not carpet bathrooms and basements.
- Remove or replace previously soaked carpets and upholstery.
What areas have high mold exposures?
- Antique shops
- Construction areas
- Flower shops
- Summer cottages
- Lake Houses

Three Types of Contaminated Water
Give SERVPRO of Flower Mound a call if you experience a water damage in your home or business.
Did you know that SERVPRO® of Flower Mound also cleans up sewage backups?
Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses. Our professionals at SERVPRO® of Flower Mound have specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.
Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water. Our team of technicians will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.
The three types of contaminated water:
Category 1: "Clean Water"
Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.
- Water from a clean source like a broken water line
- If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3
Category 2: "Gray Water"
Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.
- May contain bacteria and viruses
- Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated
Category 3: "Black Water"
Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause health issues. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.
- May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
- Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup
24 Hour Emergency Service
Water contaminated with sewage backup should be considered an emergency situation and dealt with as quickly as possible. Our technicians at SERVPRO® of Flower Mound are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for any emergency situations that arise.
3 inches of water in a recently purchased home!
One of the bedrooms affected in a recently purchased home.
Our customer in Flower Mound recently purchased a home and had not yet moved in. When they came to check on everything due to the freezing weather they walked in to find 3 inches of standing water throughout the entire home. As you can imagine this is not what they wanted to see in their new home.
They called their State Farm agent who directed them to our office for emergency services. Our crew was onsite fast to extract the water and begin the drying process. As you can tell from the picture some of the wood flooring had already begun to buckle heavily and needed to be removed.
Rescue MAT systems were used on other areas to save the hardwood flooring for the customer which they appreciated. SERVPRO of Flower Mound fully believes in "restore don't replace", it's not only beneficial for the customer as they require less interruption but the insurance companies as well.

Slow HVAC Leak Causes Mold Growth
Portion of the growth in a hallway closet
Being in the restoration industry we see a lot of condensation issues from HVAC units as well as pans overflowing without notice until microbial growth is seen.
Our mold remediation crew performed work not only in this closet but also in the attic. The insulation in the attic was covering a large area where the HVAC system had been leaking slowly for a while causing microbial growth on the decking.
Affected insulation, drywall, and decking was removed in order to properly remediate the issue. Once the remediation was complete the home was tested to ensure the areas were safe for the family and a Certificate of Mold Damage Remediation was provided.
If you have concerns of microbial growth in your home a Mold Assessment Consultant may be required to provide testing and a protocol. Once a protocol is completed SERVPRO of Flower Mound a Licensed Mold Remediation Company can perform the work accordingly.
How A Water Restoration Technician Assists After Disaster
SERVPRO of Flower Mound is an IICRC Certified Firm.
Why a water restoration technician?
A water restoration technician has an extremely important job when a home is affected by excess moisture or fluid. Certified professionals in the industry can quickly reverse the extensive damage that a flood or sewage backflow can cause, and save as many items as possible in the process. And when dealing with contaminated fluids, especially when it has pooled in the home, only certified professionals should be allowed to manage the cleanup. Attempting to perform cleanup efforts without expert assistance can lead to injury or illness, both of which can be severe.
What can you expect?
A certified water restoration technician will usually be on call around the clock, except for those times when an entire community has been affected by a major disaster. As soon as a professional is on site, they will assess the situation and determine what items need immediate rescuing. If fluid has pooled in areas around the home, then pumps will be used to remove it.
Concerned about the "M Word"?
The home will be dried using a configuration of heavy duty air movers and dehumidifiers, and while it dries, the firm will move through the building and look for any evidence of mold or pathogen contamination. If pathogens or mold are present, they will be eliminated using special procedures. This will ensure the home is safe to return to, and with concerted drying efforts, the building will as good as new once professionals have completed their work.

Hurricane Harvey Storm Response
Water line from Hurricane Harvey
SERVPRO of Flower Mound was activated for storm response after Hurricane Harvey hit in Houston, Texas along with hundreds of other SERVPRO franchises across the nation.
Hurricane Harvey was devastating for so many families, we were honored to help them with the restoration of their homes during this time. Although the water didn't reach attic level in this home you can see from the photo how high the water rose in this neighborhood. The family was without power for quite a while and a lot was lost due to the storm. Majority of the home was gutted due to the high water so this family will almost be starting over.
It's heartbreaking to see this happen to so many families but for us it's a very humbling experience.

Commonly Asked Questions Regarding Mold
If you have mold in your home or business give SERVPRO of Flower Mound a call 972-420-4771
What are molds?
One of the most common questions we receive at SERVPRO is: what exactly is mold? What kind of mold do I have? How do I keep it from spreading?
Molds are fungi that can be found both indoors and outdoors. No one knows how many species of fungi exist but estimates range from tens of thousands to perhaps three hundred thousand or more. Molds grow best in warm, damp, and humid conditions, and spread and reproduce by making spores. In addition, mold spores can survive harsh environmental conditions, such as dry conditions, that do not support normal mold growth.
What are some of the common indoor molds?
In many cases, the mold can simply be remediated. Please give us a call to schedule an appointment.
SERVPRO can help to remediate the mold in your home. In addition, SERVPRO will bring in air scrubbers that will help to remove the mold spores in the air in order to prevent any additional mold from forming. In most cases, the contaminated area will be sealed off in order to contain the mold spores in the air while the air is being "scrubbed" by the air scrubbers.

November is Child Safety and Protection Month
Child Safety and Protection Month Starts Tomorrow!
Below are tips for helping to keep children safe at home.
- Use safety gates. Even before your baby crawls, install safety gates to match your home and protect curious children from harm. Hardware mounted gates should be installed at the top and bottom of the stairs.
- Prepare for bedtime: Remove all soft, fluffy and loose bedding from the baby’s sleep area. This includes pillows, blankets, quilts, bumper pads, sleep positioners, sheepskins, stuffed toys and other soft products.
- Be mindful of plants. Choose decorative plants that are nontoxic. Common household plants can often cause serious sickness.
- Use Doormats. Place a welcome mat outside your home or apartment. Pesticides and other toxins may be carried inside on the soles of people's shoes.
- Be cautious of choking hazards. Be vigilant about coins, marbles, keys, jewelry, paper clips, water bottle tops, safety pins, removable rubber tips on doorstops, jeweled decorations on children's clothing, crayons, and hard and round foods.
- Check out your furniture. Use angle braces or anchors to secure large furniture to the wall.
- Hot water: Set hot water heaters no higher than 120 degrees F. A lower water temperature reduces the chance of scald burns.
- Fingerprint your children. Contact your local police department to ask if the department provides home fingerprinting kits. Some departments will fingerprint your child for you. If your local police department does neither, you can easily find fingerprint kits for sale online. http://www.yoursafechild.com/
- Be Mindful of Windows. Screens are meant to keep bugs out, not prevent children from falling. Never put furniture or cribs near windows where children can easily fall through.
- Dishwasher Hazards. Point knives, forks, and other sharp items downward in the utensil basket. Don't fill the dispenser with detergent until you're ready to run the load, and wipe out any that's left over after each cycle. Always replace the cap on the bottle tightly, and store it in a locked cabinet. Keep the dishwasher closed and latched when it's not in use.
- Stoves and Kitchen Ranges. Make sure free-standing or slide-in ranges are installed with anti-tip brackets that secure the rear legs to the floor. Manufacturers are required to provide these brackets on ranges made after 1991, but you can contact the company for the parts, or order them from an appliance-parts store. Keep the oven door closed when not using the oven, and never allow your child to lean on or climb on the range or oven door. Install child safety locks on knobs. Install stove guards.
- Fire Safety. For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home and in every sleeping area. Teach kids never to play with matches and lighters. Make a habit of placing these items up and away from young children. Create and practice a home fire escape plan with two ways out of every room in case of a fire.

National Fire Prevention Week
Fire Prevention Week October 8-14
October 8th - 14th is National Fire Prevention Week.
In a fire, seconds count. Seconds can mean the difference between residents of our community escaping safely from a fire or having their lives end in tragedy.
That’s why this year’s Fire Prevention Week theme: “Every Second Counts: Plan 2 Ways Out!” is so important. It reinforces why everyone needs to have an escape plan. Here’s this year’s key campaign messages:
- Draw a map of your home with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
- Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
- Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
- Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the fire department to find.
- Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.
- Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

What does the fire restoration process typically look like?
SERVPRO of Flower Mound is here to help 24/7 after your fire damage!
Every fire damage event is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” fire damage emergency.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The restoration process begins when you call us. Our representative will ask questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us respond immediately with the appropriate equipment and resources.
Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
We carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.
Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service
Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, we can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.
Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.
Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces
We use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.
Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing
We clean, sanitize, and disinfect all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. We use a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
Step 7: Restoration
Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.

Residential Mold Remediation Due to a Hot Water Heater Leak
Microbial Growth on Drywall in the Affected Hot Water Heater Closet
With the Texas heat and high humidity we have had lately it didn't take long for spores to spread throughout this home affecting several rooms. This hot water heater had been leaking for an unknown amount of time which caused microbial growth along the drywall and baseboards.
Our customer hired a mold assessment consultant to take air samples and provide a protocol for remediation in order to receive a clearance test once we completed our work. Written protocols are extremely helpful to ensure everything is done accurately and as per the guidelines.
Remediation services were performed and clearance was received for this customer. She now has her home back to normal and no longer has concerns for her health!

Storm Damage Floods Half of an Assisted Living Center
Standing water in an assisted living facility due to heavy rainfall
A 40,000 square foot assisted living facility in Sunnyvale, Texas experienced flooding throughout half of the building due to heavy rainfall. Several areas of the facility had 3 inches of standing water that needed to be extracted as soon as possible to continue with construction.
SERVPRO of Flower Mound and a fellow franchise teamed up to perform the restoration services on the structure. One team began extraction of the water immediately while another team started bringing in equipment and staging for the dry out.
