The Fire Damage Restoration Process
SERVPRO of Flower Mound Professionals have the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire condition!
As with almost everything in life, each fire damage is a little different and as such requires a unique solution. The general process however stays the same. The following steps show our restoration process for a “typical” fire damage.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The restoration process begins when you call the SERVPRO® of Flower Mound office. Our representative will ask a series of questions regarding the fire damage event that will help us dispatch technicians with the appropriate equipment and resources.
Step 2: Inspection and Fire Damage Assessment
Our Professionals will carefully inspect and test adjoining rooms of your property to determine the extent of the fire, smoke, and soot damage. This step is crucial to developing a plan of action.
Step 3: Immediate Board-Up and Roof-Tarp Service
Fire damage can often compromise windows, walls, and roofs. To maintain security and to protect against further damage, the SERVPRO® of Flower Mound technicians can board up missing windows and walls and place tarps on damaged roofs.
Step 4: Water Removal and Drying (if water damage is present)
The water removal process begins almost immediately and removes the majority of the water. We will then use dehumidifiers and air movers to remove the remaining water and complete the drying process.
Step 5: Removal of Smoke and Soot from All Surfaces
The SERVPRO® of Flower Mound technicians use specialized equipment and techniques to remove smoke and soot from ceilings, walls, and other surfaces.
Step 6: Cleaning and Sanitizing
We will clean all of the restorable items and structures that were damaged by the fire. Using a variety of cleaning techniques to restore your belongings to pre-fire condition. We’re also trained to remove odors using industrial air scrubbers and fogging equipment.
Step 7: Restoration
Restoration is the final step—getting your home or business to its pre-fire condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall, painting, and installing new carpet; or it may entail major repairs such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
Setting up a containment for mold
SERVPRO of Flower Mound technician taping cabinets
A local company called in SERVPRO of Flower Mound when they discovered they were in need of mold remediation. After years of wear and tear water permeated the carpet in their office space and left without remediation it grew mold. SERVPRO of Flower Mound ensured a protocol had been made and quickly got to work on the site. For those that do not know, mold remediation cannot begin until a containment has been set up. The containment ensures that mold from the affected area will not spread to unaffected areas. Here we see a SERVPRO of Flower Mound technician in PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) working on the containment. In addition to the tape a cover will be placed over the door and any other openings will be closed.
With fire comes water
Lightning strike causes house fire
The chances of being struck by lightning in the U.S. in a year are 1 in 700,000. The chances your home catches fire is maybe .03%. One unlucky family experienced both of these phenomena during a recent storm. As the firefighters hosed down the lightening caused fire that began to engulf their roof, the family became acutely aware of just all that they had lost. What was not charred was now soaking wet and more than likely unsalvageable.
This is where SERVPRO of Flower Mound is here to help. As worry turns to overwhelming our technicians, managers and office staff all have the training and the knowledge to walk with you through your time in need.
We never want a family to need our number, but in the event of an emergency make sure you have ours on hand. SERVPRO of Flower Mound (972) 420 – 4771.

What to do until help arrives
Water damage to a business
A water heater breaks, the sink won’t stop running or some other clean water source causes damage to your home. You’ve called SERVPRO® and we’re on our way, but in the meantime there are some things you can do to help mitigate.
- Shut off the water source
- Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building
- Remove as much excess water as possible
- Wipe excess water from word furniture
- Place aluminum foil or wood blocks between furniture legs and wet carpet
- Remove paintings and place them in a safe/dry are
You may have noticed I said ‘clean water source’ in the beginning of this post. Water from toilets, outside the home and any other contaminated source pose a different danger. When water damage has been caused by contaminated water we suggest avoiding all contact and washing your hands thoroughly after contact with contaminated items.
What happens when you don’t mitigate
Water damage untreated will likely end up with mold
Unbeknownst to you water entered into your home or commercial property. It sat and temperatures rose and fell, as they tend to do this time of year in Texas. Time goes by and by the time you stumble upon some unchecked cabinet, or unused corner of your property, mold has begun to grow. This is a more common cause of mold, but it gives us a chance to talk about the importance of mitigation.
Drying out your home or commercial property immediately after a water damage changes the size and severity of the damage and ultimately saves money and time. Ignoring a wet spot or choosing to not have an ERP (Emergency Readiness Plan) created for your property leaves you at risk.
For a complimentary ERP call SERVPRO of Flower Mound at (214) 250-1626.
"What are you guys doing?"
When it comes to water damage, especially in a home, a common question is “what are you guys going to do?” In a previous post I touched on the 6 Steps of Water Damage Restoration:
- Emergency Contact
- Inspection and Damage Assessment
- Water Removal/Water Extraction
- Drying and Dehumidification
- Cleaning and Sanitizing
In this post I want to shine light on the meat of the process so to speak, number three: water removal/water extraction. This step removes the majority of the water from your home/property which in turn reduces the drying time and also helps to prevent mold growth as well as secondary water damage. With the use of powerful pumps and truck-mounted vacuum units, SERVPRO is able to quickly remove hundreds or even thousands of gallons of water from your property.
Water Damage at a Local Bank
Inwood National Bank
Sunday evening as families were preparing for Christmas, a water line at a nearby bank burst and water began to flood the two story property. Proof that water damage can strike at any (and usually the most inconvenient) time. Commercial water restoration presents its own unique challenges, most importantly for the business owner, is that every hour spent cleaning is an hour of lost revenue. Thankfully the team members at SERVPRO of Flower Mound have the training, experience and equipment to manage water and flooding damage of all sizes. Whether it be a large water emergency, similar to the bank, or a smaller water damage event, SERVPRO of Flower Mound will respond quickly to mitigate the damage and manage the restoration project through to completion.

Let our family take care of yours
The team that works and plays together
With offices across the country, technicians nationally certified and a factory that makes patented cleaning products SERVPRO is not a small company by any meaning of the word. SERVPRO of Flower Mound, however, distinguishes itself by being a franchise that has all of the means of a large corporation, while maintaining a family owned feeling. The credit for this falls onto the shoulders of our owner, John Mondy. Due to his scrupulous hiring standards and acceptance of “nothing short of amazing”, the team here at SERVPRO of Flower Mound is truly bonded like family. When disaster strikes and your family is in need of help, call ours. 24/7/365 we don't stop until we've made it "Like it never even happened." (972) 420-4771.
Restore vs Replace Mentality
Restoring even the most delicate belongings
The restore vs. replace mentality is one of the greatest assets SERVPRO of Flower Mound has. When it comes to making it "Like it never even happened." it’s impossible to overstate the importance of keeping as many of the original items as possible. This allows prices to stay down as the cost for restoration is 20% of the cost for replacement. More importantly restoring is the preferred option because whether we realize it or not, the things in our homes, even the most arbitrary, have some kind of sentimental value. The blanket you always grab when you watch a movie, the plate you put your Thanksgiving turkey on or the couch your grandparents gave you. Every item of yours is important and SERVPRO of Flower Mound will treat it as such.
Faster to any disaster
Faster than the speed of light, your SERVPRO of Flower Mound team
SERVPRO of Flower Mound works hard to be faster to any disaster. How fast is fast you may ask? Our work from start to finish, that is from the time you call our office to the moment the work is finished and we hand in the bill, is on average about 5 days. What does that look like in real life? Say your water heater broke just as you got to work on Monday morning. You call SERVPRO of Flower Mound at (972) 420-4771 right away. Within 4 hours we’re on site placing equipment and on the fifth day, Friday, your home is dry. Is this the case for every job? Certainly not, but the dedication to exceptional work and the importance of restoring your home in a timely manner remain exactly the same.
Highly trained staff
Training above the norm

Advanced equipment and technology
The most advanced equipment
The past few decades has seen a rapid advancement in the technology and techniques used in the restoration industry. These advancements allow SERVPRO of Flower Mound Professionals to restore a property back to preloss condition quickly, reliably, and more effectively. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) sets practical standards for restoration and cleaning. The IICRC S500 Water Damage Guide is a specific set of practical standards that incorporate the field of psychometry, which involves the manipulation of temperature and relative humidity to remove moisture and dry a property quickly and effectively. By using equipment such as thermal imagine cameras to identify the location of unwanted water, truck-mounted and portable extraction units for performing efficient water removal, high-velocity air movers that allow moisture to evaporate at a faster pace, air scrubbers to remove odors and control air quality, and OSHA-approved cleaning agents, SERVPRO of Flower Mound is invested in delivering the best quality service with the most advanced technology.
SERVPRO of Flower Mound puts in a team for the local 5k
On Saturday October 20th, as the sun lingered behind the horizon six members of the SERVPRO of Flower Mound team stood in front of the AMC movie theater located in The Shops at Highland Village. Laughing and attempting to stretch they prepared for the Texas Fallen PD 5k with no guise of experience. The attendance was not due to a love of running nor to a profound interest in waking long before the sun rose, but instead a love and appreciation for those who protect our communities. As a franchise owned by a veteran and a corporation that is sponsoring the NCAA First Responder’s Bowl, events such as these are where we choose to spend our time. Giving back to our community and spending the rest of the day within The Shops at Highland Village meeting some of the citizens that call Southern Denton counties such as Flower Mound, Lewisville and Highland Village their home.
Commercial property takes on water
A Community in need deserves SERVPRO of Flower Mound indeed
Mitigation is defined as the act of mitigating, or lessening the force or intensity of something unpleasant. The management staff at one local assisted living facility took the message to heart when they noticed water getting in through some windows. As the deluge of rain fell from the heavy black storm clouds technicians at the SERVPRO of Flower Mound office received the call and began deploying resources. Before the clouds had a chance to retreat technicians were on site working quickly and around the clock. Within a few days the project site was brought back to preloss condition with limited business interruption.
The truth about our service is that we don’t ever want you to need us. We are not a company that you want to need, but just like insurance when the time come you’ll be happy we’re there.

The Water Damage Restoration Process
Technician Shane taking moisture readings
Every water damage situation is a little different, and requires a unique solution, but the general process stays the same. The steps listed below illustrate our process for the “typical” water damage emergency.
Step 1: Emergency Contact
The cleanup and restoration begins with a phone call. Our national call center is fully staffed 24 hours a day and ready to dispatch the nearest SERVPRO Franchise Professionals to your home or business. When you are dealing with water damage, immediate action is crucial. A delay of just a few hours can greatly increase the severity of damage
Step 2: Inspection and Damage Assessment
The water damage restoration process begins with a detailed inspection of your property, including a damage assessment. The SERVPRO Franchise Professional is determining the scope of the damage so he or she can develop an appropriate plan of action.
Step 3: Water Removal/Water Extraction
The water extraction step removes the majority of the water from your home or property. By performing a thorough water extraction, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals help reduce the drying time and help to prevent mold and secondary water damage. They use powerful pumps and truck-mounted vacuum units to quickly remove hundreds or thousands of gallons of water from your property.
Step 4: Drying and Dehumidification
After the water removal step, your floors and walls may look dry at first glance, but they are still wet to the touch. Most building materials, like drywall and wood, are porous and will retain significant water. The retained water will cause these materials to warp, swell, or break down and can also cause mold damage.
Step 5: Cleaning and Sanitizing
Your property’s walls, floors, and other surfaces will likely need professional cleaning treatments. Besides cleaning your property’s structure, SERVPRO Franchise Professionals will also clean your belongings, like furniture, upholstery, clothing, and other restorable personal items, damaged by the water. Flooding and water damage often require odor removal and deodorization treatments, since wet materials have an unpleasant odor.
Step 6: Restoration
Restoration, the final step, is the process of restoring your home or business to its pre-water damage condition. Restoration may involve minor repairs, such as replacing drywall and installing new carpet, or may entail major repairs, such as the reconstruction of various areas or rooms in a home or business.
Somethings just can't be replaced
The SERVPRO of Flower Mound franchise provides cleanup and recovery services for many biohazard situations. These include the following:
Crime scene residues
Tear gas cleanup
Meth lab cleanup
The decontamination of a home or business due to trauma, sewage backups, chemical spills, hoarding, or other biohazards can be both dangerous and emotional. Because of this specialized training and experience is key when choosing a cleanup company.
Recently we were called to a woman’s home in Grapevine to attend to the belongings after such an event and while it was undeniably sad, it was heartwarming to be able to tell the family that we could restore the belongings of their loved one. It is always a big selling point that restoration costs a dramatic amount less than replacing, but in such events there is no way to replace the sentimental personal effects.
Water Damage Timeline
Storms cause water damage
- Water quickly spreads throughout your property, saturating everything in its path.
- Water is absorbed into walls, floors, upholstery, and belongings.
- Furniture finishes may bleed, causing permanent staining on carpets.
- Photographs, books, and other paper goods start to swell and warp.
Hours 1 - 24:
- Drywall begins to swell and break down.
- Metal surfaces begin to tarnish.
- Furniture begins to swell and crack.
- Dyes and inks from cloth and paper goods spread and stain.
- A musty odor appears.
48 Hours to 1 Week:
- Mold and mildew may grow and spread.
- Doors, windows, and studs swell and warp.
- Metal begins to rust and corrode.
- Furniture warps and shows signs of mold.
- Paint begins to blister.
- Wood flooring swells and warps.
- Serious biohazard contamination is possible.
More Than 1 Week:
- Restoration time and cost increase dramatically; replacing contaminated materials and structural rebuilding may be extensive.
- Structural safety, mold growth, and biohazard contaminants pose serious risks to occupants.
Microscopic mold spores exist almost everywhere, outdoors and indoors, making it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:
- Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
- Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air, and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or on a pet.
- Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
- Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
- Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
- Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.
What should you do after a fire?
Your family is safe, all pets and stuffed animals included, now what? Here are easy tips to remember for AFTER a fire:
- Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpets.
- Keep hands clean so as not to further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.
- Place clean towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.
- If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator and prop doors open.
- Clean and protect chrome with light coating of petroleum jelly or oil.
- Wash houseplants on both sides of leaves.
- Change HVAC filter.
- Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers.
- Attempt to wash any walls or painted surfaces or shampoo carpet or upholstery without contacting your SERVPRO Franchise Professional.
- Attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire, heat or water without consulting an authorized repair service.
- Use any canned or packaged food or beverages that may have been stored near the fire, heat or water.
- Turn on ceiling fixtures if ceiling is wet. The wiring may be damaged.
- Send garments to an ordinary dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set smoke odor.
Knowledge is power and becoming familiar with what you should and shouldn’t do ensures that when a disaster does strike your family will be able to recover quickly.
DID YOU KNOW? (storm)
While thunder won't hurt you-lightning will!
Being a restoration company you will often hear of the doom and gloom associated with storms. But when properly prepared for storms can be really interesting!
Here are a few fun storm facts:
- In order for there to be a thunder storm you need three things
- Moisture (to make the clouds and the rain)
- Unstable air (usually warm air that can rise rapidly)
- Lift (something able to lift the air, such as fronts, mountains or sea breezes)
- At any one moment there are nearly 1.800 thunderstorms occurring
- The lightning produced from thunderstorms kill more people each year than tornadoes do
- By counting the seconds between the flash of lightning and the clap of thunder you can estimate how many miles away a storm is!
DID YOU KNOW? (mold)
While many of us think of mold and cringe because we associate it with bad things such as infections, disease and death, the truth of the matter is that there is a lot of mold in the world that we love to eat and couldn’t live without!
Did you know:
- Cheese is made from mold. Geotrichum candidum to be exact.
- Quorn, a meat substitute primarily sold in the UK, is fusarium venenatum.
- Alexander Fleming, a brilliant Scottish physician, microbiologist and pharmacoligist discovered penicillin from a mold called Penicillium notatum. It was actually the world’s first antibiotic.
- The immunosuppressant drug cyclosporine, used to suppress the rejection of transplanted organs, is derived from the mold Tolypocladium inflatum.
- Several statin cholesterol-lowering drugs are derived from molds

What Secondary Damage can occur after water damage in your home or commercial building?
Sebastian and Noah working on drying a structure

SERVPRO of Flower Mound strives to prevent secondary damage every time we remediate water damage. Building material and flooring are dried and treated to prevent mold and other allergens/contaminates using specialized equipment and cleaning products.

Mold Needs the Right Environment to Grow
PPE when dealing with mold is a must
We are constantly exposed to thousands of different types of fungi in our everyday lives. Certain types of fungi tend to exist naturally in soils, plants, fruits and textiles. Exposure to these fungi in naturally occurring doses is generally not harmful.
Mold can grow on areas with the following:
- Water, moisture or high humidity
- Food (any organic substance)
- The right temperature (generally 68-86 degrees F, but some can grow in 30 degrees or colder)
- Lack of ventilation
- Mold presents greater challenges to young children, the elderly and other immunosuppressed people.
- Some molds can produce toxins if the environmental conditions are right.
If you have had a water damage and assumed it would be okay drying on its own or if you suspect you have mold, please contact SERVPRO® of Flower Mound today.
Is your home storm ready?
As restoration professionals we often see the outcome of a home that wasn’t storm ready and in light of the billowing storm clouds outside of our office window I believe this is a perfect time to reach out with some helpful reminders!
- Let everyone in your home know what the plan is in the event of a storm, knowledge is power.
- Have furniture placed away from doorways so exit points aren’t blocked and have items arranged so that you could live on a single floor if need be. Think of warm clothing, blankets and whatever else you may need close at hand.
- Delicate items and those of value should be kept off of walls or shelves and placed in safe places, especially during storm season.
- Make sure you have insurance with details and a hard copy easily accessible, it’s a sad truth that many people don’t have as much coverage as they need when a catastrophe strikes.
It’s always sad to talk about the what-if’s involved with emergency storm situations, but being prepared is one way you can assure your life will get back to normal as quickly as possible.
Who wore it better
Ghostbuster... or MOLD-buster
Why does one of our technicians look like he could be a part of the ghostbusters gang? Because PPE! PPE stands for personal protective equipment and it’s an integral part of making sure our team stays safe while handling a variety of situations. In this photo our technicians is working on a mold job, which is more commonly when you’ll see one of our team dawn the gear. However, our production manager Jake as well as our franchise owner John just dressed up in a similar outfit to inspect a biohazard clean up. The get up may look silly, but SERVPRO of Flower Mound makes health and safety a priority; both for our work family and our customer that become family.
If you suspect you might have mold call SERVPRO of Flower Mound at (972) 420-4771!
Identifying the different levels of fire damage
Burnt Bunny makes a full recovery
Much like anything else, all fires are not the same. Some burn blue while others orange and some create more smoke than others. Because there are many different types of fire, there are many different types or fire damage and therefore many different types of fire restoration.
Minor fire damage can be identified by a light to moderate amount of smoke residue only in a few areas. As such, restoration calls for dry and/or wet cleaning the ceilings, walls, floors and contents.
Mediums fire damage situations, those where smoke residue is moderate and more materials are affected, typically will require repainting. In addition to the new coat of paint materials such as drywall, cabinets and contents are more likely to need to be replaced.
Last are the major fire damage scenarios. When the fire becomes so hot at a specific point that the structural frame and/or finishes become charred. This fire damage requires emergency services and will often require restorers to pack up any salvageable belongings to store at a separate location.
The best way to avoid all three types of fire damage is to practice safety measure, ESPECIALLY in the kitchen!
The Mold Remediation Process
Moldy carpet at local property
You realized that you need mold remediation, so you gave your local SERVPRO® a call and now you’re wondering “what are they going to do?” While it may not be pretty and it certainly isn’t easy, SERVPRO® has taken the process of mold remediation and broken it down it to simple steps.
First we have to inspect. Where is it growing, what caused it and most importantly, what do we need to do to get rid of it. Once the plan of action is decided the contaminated area(s) are contained and the air is filtered while trained technicians remove all mold and mold-infested materials. As a team works to clean the structure another team will work on the contents and belonging that were within the structure. Furniture, decorations and clothing can all be affected by mold and SERVPRO® of Flower Mound is prepared to clean it all!
Do you have an ERP for your commercial property?
A team that's always ready to go
One of the most important aspects of having a business is having an emergency evacuation plan. It is a sad truth that many people have been hurt when a company or building lack such a plan and an emergency, such as a fire, occurs. Such a plan ensures the safety and wellbeing of individuals within a structure. An ERP, emergency readiness plan, offers that same assurance, but to the owner and the business. It is the handbook on getting your business back open and running in a timely manner. Who to call, where to find valves and knobs and most importantly a layout already on hand for your local SERVPRO® so that mitigation can begin as soon as possible.
Whether you choose to have an electric copy on your phone or a hard copy on hand, the ERP is easily accessible to whomever. It is your peace of mind as of business owner, that extra insurance policy when you go on vacation, because you know that in the event of an emergency all of the proper steps will be taken to ensure a quick recovery.

So you have mold... what now?
Our Project Manager Megan is always ready to hear what's going on and answer any questions you may have
Being a SERVPRO® franchise that is licensed in mold remediation means that we at SERVPRO® of Flower Mound get quite a bit of phone calls that begin with “what do I do?” So I am here with the answers!
- We need as much information as you can possibly think of when you first call. This means how much mold you can see, what surfaces it is covering, how long has it has been there and where do you think the moisture is coming from that has caused the mold. The more we know, the better prepared we are to assist!
- Depending on how you answer we will either schedule an appointment to come and take a look for ourselves or we will advise you to call a mold inspector.
- The inspector will do just as the name implies, he/she will come to your location and test the air. This step is important because it lets you know just what kind of mold is present. The testing also give the inspector the information to put together what is called a protocol. Basically a step by step instruction manual telling a remediation expert, such as ourselves, what to do in order to pass the follow up test.
- After our work is done, the inspector returns to the property and tests again.
Still have more question? Send us an email or give us a call and we’d be happy to answer them! The scariest part is not knowing.
House fires now burn hotter and faster, so what do you do?
Like it never even happened
Fire is the visible process of combustion. Once fuel is heated to its ignition point the duration of the flame is dependent on three factors, oxygen, heat and fuel. In complete combustion fuel will not create smoke or other products, only water and carbon dioxide. This creates the blue flame that we typically see in homes from cooking. Complete combustion requires there be enough oxygen to completely combine with the fuel gas, when there is not enough oxygen you have incomplete combustion. This is going to typically be a yellow or orange flame that produces smoke.
An article by TODAY states that research shows 30 years ago you would have had about 17 minutes to get out of a house that was on fire. Today that time is down to 3 or 4 minutes. Since newer homes have more synthetic materials, the backing on carpets, the drapes and most pillows, house fires now burn hotter and faster.
So what do you do? Become informed, KNOWLEDGE IS POWER! The top five common causes of house fires are cooking equipment, heating, smoking in bedrooms, electrical equipment and candles. Knowing what to be cautious of is step one, step two is having a plan to get out of the house and to contact emergency services in the event of a fire and step three is calling SERVPRO® of Flower Mound to get back into your home “like it never even happened”.

IT'S BLACK MOLD.... I think.
The fear of black mold has been around for as long as I can remember, and while I’m only 23 that’s still a substantial amount of time! Since coming into the restoration business and dealing with the multicellular growth on a regular basis I’ve learned some things.
First, just because your mold is black does not mean you have BLACK mold. It sounds silly but it’s the truth, molds such as Nigrospora and Cladosporium are black in color but are not known to have toxic side effects. Second, Stachybotrys chartarum, more commonly referred to as black mold can actually also be dark green. The third, and arguably the most important, thing I’ve learned since joining the business is that unless you’re a trained professional there is no way to know for sure.
If you’ve seen any growth within your home or business give us a call at (972) 420-4771, we’d be happy to take a look for you!
